This article is divided in two parts. The first part describes the nature, the purpose and the medieval and humanistic reception of the anonymous italian translation of Petrarch’s Fam., XII 2, to Niccolò Acciaiuoli, a long treatise-letter on the good administration of a state. It also shows the history and the main features of an important rhetorical collection of speeches, letters and vernacular translations in which the text was immediately included, with particular regard to the material peculiarities of the manuscripts, to their circulation in the Florentine area and to the other literary works transmitted with the text. The second part gives the census of more than 100 manuscripts containing the text; for each of them, it provides a synthetic description and bibliography.
