Abstract
The value of the word nadežda in the Russian cultural horizon is reconstructed through a review of its lexical definition in the lexical entries of some of the most important monolingual Russian dictionaries. A contrastive analysis with Italian, French, English and German brings into light a shared lexical definition of this word in Romance, Germanic and Slavic languages, that are characterised from an argumentative point of view by a common stance with respect to the concept of hope.
