Abstract
During the XVIIIth century the business of silk was fundamental in economic and financial equilibrium of several regions in Northern Italy. Areas such as the “Bergamasca” (the large province of Bergamo) gradually increased its manufacture and commerce by specializing in silk yarn for export. An original characteristic of Bergamo silk industry was its total freedom from any form of regulation, such as the technological standards designed to improve the quality of silk in Piedmont and in the Eastern part of Venice “Terraferma” (mainland). However, Bergamo silk industry get known and its products were really appreciated in international market. The research is based on original sources from archives and libraries of Bergamo and Venice.
