Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] In the care relationship, mercy takes on a special meaning, because it becomes the driving force of choices among the "many conscience conflicts that emerge [...] when the precept contrasts with our moral convictions, our reference values, our religious ideas, philosophical or political and our very idea of dignity ". This profile emerges especially with respect to certain topics, such as end-of-life, medically assisted procreation or abortion. An enhancement of mercy - to be understood first and foremost as a human attitude "that transcends mere cognitive rationality" - as a key motive through which to develop the doctor-patient relationship could act as an antidote to the "cultural irreligiousness that has removed death, desacralized the body and technically artificialized birth, living and dying "; it would thus return to medicine the sense of limit and dialogic character, restoring that "substantially relational anthropology that can place us in a position to address the needs of our fellow men".
