Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] Mattering can be translated into Italian as "sense of counting" and can be defined as the feeling of feeling like an important, worthy and appreciated person (Prilleltensky, 2020; Schlossberg, 1989). The first researchers to introduce the concept of mattering were Rosenberg and McCollough (1981) who, studying self-esteem, defined it as the subjective experience of being relevant or insignificant. From their point of view, the person who feels he or she matters experiences mattering by virtue of the significant connections he or she has with other people. This chapter explores the mattering of adolescents in Italy in different areas of life (family, friends and school), investigating its correlations with the 6Cs of Positive Youth Development.
