Abstract

[Machine translation] The essay outlines the features of Valtellina agriculture in the Lombard-Veneto Kingdom. The province of Sondrio could be divided into three economic areas. In the first area – the ancient county of Chiavenna – agriculture played a secondary role and the production system was based on commercial activities. The second area, along the sunny slopes of the Valle dell’Adda, viticulture shaped the land scape with its terraces. Fields and vineyards were leased with a long-term contract, called livello. A third productive system in the North was based on pastures and breeding of dairy cattle. The livelihood of the families was guaranteed by emigration. The second part the essay deals with the economic collapse due to parasites and an increase of land tax.
