Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] The real economy and the dynamics of the economic systems have been the basis of all the activities of the Edison Foundation. Particular attention was given both to entrepreneurial innovation and to investments in techno-science. The market cannot be left alone with its mechanisms which often and inevitably are short to medium term and therefore not sufficient to give the initial impulses to those innovations which then generate large waves of structural technological change and technical progress. It therefore requires an independent research and development activity of the "laboratories" financed by public funds that gradually go towards decentralization to the business system supported by adequate incentives. These dynamics have become even more complex in the 21st century on the one hand due to the powerful push of the digital revolution, on the other due to the constraints of eco-compatibility which have become increasingly urgent and finally to the geo-globalization that has partly globalized and partly has polarized on the US and China. Two large "state" entities in the midst of which the EU and the EMU have not yet managed to emerge as the third promoter pole not of a tripolarism but of a multipolarism that must not be abandoned.
